The IAC will be participating in the vigil until Lynne is free. Participate as much as you can. He will be at the White House and making visits to the Federal Bureau of Prisons several blocks away, at 320 First St. NW, Washington D.C., 20534.
>
> Lynne Stewart, age 73, is suffering from stage 4 cancer in her lungs. The cancer has metastasized rapidly to her lymph nodes and shoulder. She has lost 60 pounds and her condition is deteriorating rapidly. Stewart’s condition is well-known and medically documented.
>
> As Poynter explains: “Lynne has passed all of the legalities of compassionate release and qualifies for release as the bill was written. The prison warden at Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas, has signed for her release, and so has the director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Charles R. Samuels. Probation officers charged with inspecting Lynne’s future residence approved her housing. All that is required by the statute of compassionate release has been done. Yet Lynne is still in jail! Every day that her release is postponed makes treatment of her cancer more difficult.”
>
> The national campaign for Stewart’s Compassionate Release started more than three months ago, in early March. Thousands of petitions were sent and thousands of phone calls made urging her release. The warden at Carswell Federal Prison recommended her immediate compassionate release six weeks ago.
>
> As the Lynne Stewart Defense Committee has explained, Stewart is not guilty of any crimes. In representing a prisoner charged with terrorism, Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, Stewart was unjustly convicted of delivering a simple press release for her client.
>
> All those who are concerned with Lynne’s health and unable to get to Washington, D.C., are urged to continue calling the White House, Attorney General and Federal Bureau of Prisons and sending petitions.
>
> CALL: White House - President Barack Obama – 1-202-456-1414
>
> Attorney General Eric Holder - 1-202-514-2001
>
> Federal Bureau of Prisons Director Charles Samuels – 1-202-307-3250
>
> Sign petition at IACenter.org/LynneStewartPetition or at LynneStewart.org

Flatbush Tenants Coalition City Council Candidates Forum...

Flatbush Tenants Coalition City Council Candidates Forum #Brooklyn

We stand in solidarity with the workers of Bangladesh and are outraged over the tragic collapse of the Rana Plaza building, which has killed more than 1,100 garment workers. This follows the fire at the Tazreen Fashions factory last year where more than 100 Bangladeshi workers lost their lives.

In our 3rd solidarity action, we’ll visit several retail stores in Brooklyn and demand that they sign on to the legally binding *Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh*.

The Accord, a new agreement between several global union federations and 40 prominent apparel and retail companies, requires companies to participate in and fund a program of independent safety inspections, remediation, and worker safety trainings with the involvement of trade unions. They must maintain commercial terms that enable factories to maintain safe workplaces and finance repairs. The program will be overseen by a Steering Committee consisting of an equal number of representatives of trade unions and companies and one representative of the International Labor Organization. It will be enforceable through binding arbitration.

It has been estimated that a mere $0.10 more per garment would pay for the factory improvements of this program. Is 10 cents per garment too much for worker safety? Walmart, K-Mart, Gap, Target, JC Penny, and other U.S. retailers say “yes”. We say “no more bloodshed!” It’s time to hold U.S. retailers accountable for their inaction.

While a few U.S. companies have signed onto the Accord, most, including the Gap, Walmart, Target, J.C. Penney, Sears, and Kmart, have not. The time for individual and ineffective “corporate social responsibility” programs is long over. This legally binding, multi-stakeholder Accord is the kind of framework that is much more likely to result in safer factories and better jobs for garment workers.

We demand that all apparel and retail companies that have production in Bangladesh join this program.

Illusions of Safety: Policing Hate Crimes Won't Make Us Safer

Illusions of Safety: Policing Hate Crimes Won't Make Us Safer:
sonofbaldwin:

We cannot ignore that the police, particularly the NYPD, systematically targets the most vulnerable communities with abusive and discriminatory policing practices, especially Black and Latino folks. We can’t ignore the fact that in 2012, the 6th Precinct, which covers the West Village, aggressively increased stop-and-frisks by 23% - the largest percent increase in the whole of New York City. The latest statistics from NYCLU also show that 83.5% of the stops in 6th Precinct were conducted on Black and Latino folks, yet these racial groups make up only 8% of residents in the area. Invisible in these statistics are our experiences as LGBTQ people of color who face daily profiling based on our race, gender, class, immigration status, and sexual orientations.

When LGBTQ communities seek policing and hate crime legislation as solutions to hate violence, it puts the most vulnerable among us at further risk of violence from the state. In our fear, we strengthen an unaccountable Prison-Industrial Complex that feeds on our fear of each other—that NEEDS our fear of each other—our division, our distrust of each other, to criminalize us and keep us down.

Hate violence must be treated as a systemic issue. To me, the gunman who killed Marc Carson wasn’t acting alone. He wasn’t the only person accountable. There was a whole society, a whole system that failed, that delivered the message that this kind of violence was warranted, and that low-income straight people of color have something to fear and a valid reason to hate queer people. We’re made to believe that we pose a threat to each other and that it’s ok to fear one another, attack each other, or keep each other’s communities’ in check, with either interpersonal violence or institutional violence executed through things like policing and hate crime legislation.

#SingItForThePeople!

Another fact: The NYPD also helped to close down DESIRE, located at 45 W 8th St New York, NY 10011 - the only bar with a majority people of color patronage on the same block Mark Carson was shot. DESIRE was listed online as a gay bar and although it’s client base was very mixed with gay and straight people of color, it’s two biggest nights were Thursdays & Sundays that were always packed with Black & Latino gay men. It was also known as a great spot to hang-out after the LGBTQ Pride march since it was along the parade route. Besides BBQ’s down the block at 21 W 8th St, there was no other bar and restaurant, that was seen as a people of color or LGBT POC “spot” on that block besides DESIRE.

According to patrons, The NYPD routinely harass Black gay men on the block and threatened DESIRE bartenders and manager with arrest if they did not close down the bar by 2am!! The bar finally closed back in April and one can only wonder if DESIRE had still been opened with it’s large Black gay patron base - Would Mark Carson still be alive?

Imani Henry, DESIRE patron

Equality for Flatbush: Do you Believe that Tenants and small Homeowners deserve Equal Rights,...

Equality for Flatbush: Do you Believe that Tenants and small Homeowners deserve Equal Rights,...:
equalityforflatbush:
