Drunk D.C. Cop Gets Off Easy After Shooting 3 Transgender Women

A Washington, D.C. police officer who fired multiple shots into a car with three transgender women and their friends is getting off easy. The officer, 48-year-old Kenneth Furr, was sentenced yesterday “to three years of supervised probation, a $150 fine, and 100 hours of community service,” the Washington Blade reports. The transgender community in D.C. has reacted with outrage.

The D.C. Superior Court Judge, Russell Canan, also sentenced Furr “to five years in prison but suspended all but 14 months of the prison term and credited Furr with the 14 months he already served between the time of his arrest and his trial last October,” the publication reported. The officer was released from jail while he awaits sentencing for his conviction on charges of assault and solicitation for prostitution. Furr was acquitted on the more serious charges of assault with intent to kill with a weapon.

The judge also ordered the officer to stay away from D.C.’s well known areas for transgender prostitution.

This result is the product of a legal system that constantly devalues trans lives, particularly trans people of color,” Jason Terry, an activist with the D.C. Trans Coalition, told the Blade. “Officer Furr’s defense team actively sought to portray the victims as somehow deserving of this violence, and apparently they succeeded. If roles had been reversed and a black trans woman had gotten drunk and shot a gun at a police officer, the results would be drastically different.

The case revolves around events that occurred in August 2011. On a Washington, D.C. street, Furr asked one of the transgender woman for sex for money. After the woman refused, Furr followed her to a CVS store and, when he was outside the store, pointed a gun at the transgender woman. After the officer drove away, the group of transgender woman and their male friends followed him, until Furr stopped his car and fired his gun at the car.

Then, “one of the male friends driving the vehicle ducked to avoid being shot and unintentionally rammed the car into Furr’s car, witnesses testified,” the Blade reports. “Furr responded by climbing on the hood of the car occupied by the transgender women and their friends and fired five times through the front windshield, causing three of the occupants to suffer non-fatal gunshot wounds.

When D.C. police came to the scene, they arrested Furr, who had a “blood alcohol level twice the legal limit under D.C. law,” according to the publication.

The Washington Blade also reports that Furr’s attorney seems to have convinced the jury that Furr was acting in self-defense, which is why he was not convicted on the more serious charges.

While Furr is getting off relatively easy legally, the case will have ramifications for his job. D.C. police spokesperson Gwendolyn Crump told the Blade that Furr “has been suspended without pay and that the department will follow its standard procedure for dealing with an officer convicted of a felony.” The standard procedure, according to the Blade, is that “a felony conviction, especially one associated with violence, usually results in the firing of a police officer.

Richard Haste, an NYPD officer, killed an unarmed black teen (Ramarley Graham) in front of his grandmother and 6-year-old brother at point blank range over marijuana. The landlady, Paulet Minzie, 55, ran out the shower with only a towel after hearing the gunshots. Officers then put a gun to her head and told her to put her hands up. It wasn’t until she told them that there were cameras surveilling them, that they put their guns down.

Court papers say “[He\] immediately lowered his weapon. His demeanor completely changed, and he alerted his colleague that they may be on camera,”. The footage later revealed that Graham walked calmly to his apartment followed by police barging in without a warrant, contradicting the officers original claim that the teenager was running away from him. (Source)

Haste was freed on $50,000 bail yesterday after pleading not guilty. Police cheered for him as the parents of Graham wept in the court room.

and the police cheer for injustice.

The pigs cheered and applauded their fucking colleague for murdering a kid.

I don’t see why his race is relevant.

The fact that cops are aggressive, injust, bastards is, though.

Dear white folks,

Please stop pretending like a the race of Ramarley Graham, or any unarmed POC who is murdered by the NYPD and other police forces, is irrelevant. Maybe if the majority of people murdered by police weren’t POC, you would be able to get away with your ‘color blind’ rhetorics but that isn’t the case. If Ramarley was white, I’m sure the NYPD would not have pursued him over a dime of weed and kill him in front of his 6 year old brother and grandmother. And to prove my point, I challenge you to find a case in the last year where the NYPD killed an unarmed white male person. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

Hey, you terrorist children! Open your bags and let us search you! I bet we’ll find bombs in there instead of school books!
This is disgusting, imagine if your child had to get searched on their way to class. The injustice of it is appalling. Only democracy in the Middle East? At what cost? At the cost of their childhood? What a joke.

One of the main issues that participants in the Pre-Mayday 2012 press conference scheduled for Thursday April 26 at 4:pm in Union Square will be discussing is the news that the U.S. Supreme Court is dangerously leaning towards upholding much of Arizona’s anti-immigrant, racial profiling laws. This has become a central issue for many of those who are preparing to march on May 1st in New York’s Union Square.

Teresa Gutierrez, a co-coordinator of the May 1st Coalition for Workers and Immigrant Rights, and one of the main organizers of the Mayday event in Union Square next Tuesday said “Mayday 2012 will send a strong and defiant message that if the highest court legalizes the fascistic racial profiling of millions of Brown and Black skin people, the people must shut down this whole country. This Mayday is going to be a warm-up exercise in preparation for that.”

Ms. Gutierrez continued ” Six years ago, it was outrage over the possibility of the U.S. Congress adopting the Sensenbrenner bill , which was virtually a national version of the racist Arizona law, that  caused the biggest national uprising of immigrants in the history of the U.S. on Mayday 2006.”

Ms Gutierrez added “If the Supreme Court declares a racist war against those of us who don’t look “American” enough, when immigrants rise up to defend ourselves again, we will not be alone, because this time the Trayvon Martin’s of this country will be with us, and more of the organized labor movement including Black, Brown and White workers, will be standing with us as well. May Day 2012 has made history already with the unity of immigrants, labor and the OWS movement. The Arizona Supreme Court decision is clearly an issue for the 99% to take up and fight against”.

“The whole world is watching to see if the U.S. Supreme Court endorses the racist Arizona, anti-immigrant apartheid law” Gutierrez continued.

Dozens of immigrant groups, labor representatives and activists from Occupy Wall Street will attend the April 26 Press Conference at Union Square at 4pm.

On April 3rd call, email, and fax Hennepin County Attorney Michael Freeman and demand he drop the charges against CeCe. This time, we are extending the call-in to include Assistant Attorney Marlene Senechal, head of adult prosecution.

Please send us an email us at to let us know you called/emailed/faxed in!

While Chrishaun “CeCe” McDonald is being prosecuted for murder after being violently attacked for her race and gender, Freeman’s office recently declined to prosecute the killer of Darrell Evanovich, a black man who was shot dead by a white man after an alleged robbery. While no person should be thrown to the mercy of the soulless, so-called “justice” system, the fact that CeCe is on trial after being assaulted, while a white man who killed someone after chasing them down is touted as a “good Samaritan,” highlights the racist and transphobic nature of the prosecution of CeCe. Hennepin County Attorney Michael Freeman and Marlene Senechal have the power to drop the charges against CeCe. So far, though, he has implicitly sided with CeCe’s white supremacist attackers by failing to acknowledge the racist, transphobic assault that she survived as a mitigating factor in the unintentional death of Dean Schmitz.

When: Tuesday, April 3rd, ALL DAY

Where: From home, work, wherever you find yourself!

What: Call Michael Freeman at 612-348-5540, fax at 612-348-2042, and email at

Call Marlene Senechal at 612-348-5561, fax at 612-348-3061, and email at

!!NEW!! Please CC on all your e-mails. Also please send us an e-mail with the time of your calls & faxes.

Remember to remain polite but assertive. Some key points to mention in your calls, emails, and faxes are:

  • Identify yourself as a supporter, friend, family member, or community member calling about Ms. Chrishaun McDonald’s case.
  • Tell the County Attorney’s Office why you’re concerned: Ms. McDonald was the target of a hate crime, but she was singled out for aggressive prosecution after the attack.
  • County Attorney Freeman has declined to press charges in cases like this at least three times already this year. Remind him that he has the power to drop the charges against Ms. McDonald.
  • Tell Freeman and Senechal not to side with Ms. McDonald’s white supremacist attackers: drop the charges against Ms. McDonald.

Tell Hennepin County Attorney Michael Freeman and Assistant Attorney Marlene Senechal to take a stand against hate, racism, and transphobia. Tell Freeman and Senechal to DROP THE CHARGES against Chrishaun McDonald!

RIP Troy Anthony Davis (October 9, 1968 - September 21, 2011)

Murdered by the state of Georgia with the tacit approval of millions of Americans for the crime of being black in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The struggle for justice doesn’t end with me. This struggle is for all the Troy Davises who came before me and all the ones who will come after me. I’m in good spirits and I’m prayerful and at peace. But I will not stop fighting until I’ve taken my last breath.” - Troy Davis, September 20, 2011

To take a life when a life has been lost is revenge, not justice.” - Desmond Tutu

This upcoming Wednesday will be the six month anniversary of Troy Davis’ murder.

Never forget.

1 Student Arrested Every Day In NYC Schools, 94% Are Black Or Latino

According to new data released by the NYPD [pdf], an average of one student is arrested every day in the city’s school system, and three others are issued summonses. During summer school from July through September, four students each day are arrested, and 94% of those arrested are black or Latino, and 83% are male. “The data raise concerns about black students being disproportionately arrested in the city’s schools,” Donna Lieberman, the executive director of the NYCLU says in a release. If the Bloomberg administration is truly serious about closing the achievement gap, then they must address this disparity and focus more attention on educating children — not arresting them.
